Meeting of the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization with the Resident Representative of the United Nations System in Comoros.

On the sidelines of the 10th meeting of the sub-committee of the Directors General of Customs of the African Union, Dr. Marcel Ouattara, representative of UNICEF in Comoros represented the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Moroni received the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization yesterday 20th September at UNDP headquarters.

The exchanges focused on the fight against fake medicines that are harmful to public health and legitimate trade. The representative of UNICEF and the Secretary General of the WCO have agreed to act as partners to address common problems, which on the one hand are damaging to world trade and on the other hand to the global economy and Health. «It’s at the borders where the fight against illicit goods is at stake," they say in substance.

Dr Ouattara states that "the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals calls for an active engagement of governments and all stakeholders. At the level of Customs, he continues, the fight against counterfeits that can harm health and ensure prosperity for all.

According to Dr. Mikuriya, in 2018, the WCO has chosen as the focal point, the landlocked countries, and the economies of the small islands, because they face the threats of the misdeeds of the globalization of trade. Because the free flow of flows can be used for the circulation of drugs and illicit goods which mainly affect the countries of transit like Comoros or the Caribbean.

As for the Representative of WHO, Dr. Diarra Abdoulaye recalled that collaboration between the World Health Organization is very urgent. It can make the implementation of sanitary regulation plan possible and preserve public health. Dr. Diarra mentioned that the WHO recommends the use of group orders, less costly initiatives to improve public health.

The chairman of the sub-committee of Directors General of Customs of the African Union, Mr. Souef Kamalidini thanked the Representative of UNICEF for the warm welcome, and spoke about the purpose of the meeting, that he is an exchange of views on the common problematic of the fight against illegal trade in relation to the preservation of public health and world peace.

Regarding the fight against corruption, he said "Customs must use technological tools to measure performance, computerize procedures within a framework of a harmonized system. Hence the need for Customs to work with the private sector to encourage them to adopt responsible business methods and practices that reflect professional ethics is a must. «The two sides agreed to jointly address the challenges facing the world's economies and global health, and in particular the economies of small islands.

Dr. Marcel Ouattara, UNICEF Representative in Comoros was assisted by WHO Representative Dr. Diarra Abdoulaye and his communication team and the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization Dr. Kunio Mikuriya was accompanied by Mr. Bernard Zbinden, Regional Manager for West and Central Africa Development at the Directorate of Capacity Building and the new Chairperson of the sub-committee of Directors General of Customs of the African Union, Mr. Souef Kamalidini assisted by Mrs. Djamila Radjabou, Chief of external relations of the Comorian Customs and his Communication Advisor Mr. Msa Ali Djamal.
